No casinos allowed in Japan. Pachinko is a blight here though, a cross between video games and gambling, siphoning money from the pockets of lower income people, which I totally can't fathom. Furthermore, I can't fathom the freeters (slackers) who line up an hour before the place opens...

Not that different from the VLTs here I guess. I always kind of like the idea of gambling because it's probably the only vice that doesn't appeal to me. Most gambling is essentially "a tax on not understanding math", as I've heard it described. It is bad in many ways but the government runs the gambling here so it's hard for me to get upset when people are stepping up to pay my taxes voluntarily. It just seems so stupid to me.
