I wish I'd done some sort of journal comic while I was over there, it looks like a great idea.
I'd love to see this come together as a book. It's in the vein of Guy Delisle's comics - which I adore.
and I actually do think these national traditions/habits have influences on how one develops. You've had a look at it yourself, but I'm pretty convinced your surroundings do teach you to live in a certain way. And who knows, maybe the west is also frowned upon by the Japanese, because we are taught to think individual.
Another thing that came to mind reading this, is what I heard from a family member, whom collaborated with a Japanese company for a while. According to her, the Japanese business folks are taught to always strictly follow certain steps to reach their goal. However, and I do not know if this also applies to the rest of the "west", dutch companies often just start somewhere, not really following any strict steps, until they reach their goal.
This and your comic made me realize that our ways may be different, but that it doesn't really matter. It doesn't make one "bad" or one "good", it just makes them... different
The discussion of culture that isn't your own can be sensitive, and white North Americans are particularly afraid of having opinions since they get pegged for racism in a way other nationalities don't, simply for stating their viewpoint. I can't be said to be an expert on Japan, just someone with the experience of a decade living there.
You may not be an expert, but still, living there for a decade has probably given you quite some of insight, and I couldn't imagine that your analyses would bother anyone, as you have clearly stated that they're subjective (:
