that "backwards" hand gesture freaked me out the first time i saw it. I thought the person was telling me "go away," when really she meant "come here." Weird. Though I didn't even realize the handbreak thing on the bikes... maybe because my own personal bike is a "foreign model" (Australian, I think)....
I love where this is going! I bet you could get tons of millage out of this if you printed it up and left it on counters at English schools here. I imagine teachers and students alike would enjoy it a lot.
